About Us

What is aims to promote and increase awareness of depression and suicidal behaviour by providing comprehensive information about depression and its consequences. We will inform you about the causes, signs and symptoms of depression in order for you to learn how to recognise depression. We will also inform you of helpful strategies for promoting positive mental health, including self-management resources, in addition to details of how and where to get help for depression, and how to support a family member, friend or person in need of assistance.

We also aim to provide information, tailored resources and recommendations to community professionals and healthcare professionals who can act as gatekeepers or advocates in recognising and responding to depression, in disseminating best-practice recommendations for individuals with depression and in facilitating their access to care.

Furthermore, we aim to improve the care of people who are experiencing mild to moderate depression through the provision of a guided online self-management programme for depression (the ‘iFightDepression tool’; click on the ‘Self-Management Resources’ link below to find out more about the iFightDepression tool).

In these ways, we hope to contribute to the prevention of depression and suicidal behaviour and associated stigma.

The iFightDepression website and iFightDepression tool are brands and initiatives of the European Alliance Against Depression (EAAD) consortium. These resources were developed and implemented by the PREDI-NU (Preventing Depression and Improving Awareness through Networking in the EU) Consortium and supported and funded by the European Commission in the Framework of the Health Programme – Consumer, Health and Food Executive Agency (CHAFEA; formerly EAHC- European Agency for Health and Consumers).

What is the European Alliance Against Depression (EAAD)?

The European Alliance Against Depression (EAAD) is an international network of experts committed to depressed patients and the prevention of suicidal behaviour. The main purpose of the society is to promote public health and education, and to promote the care of depressed patients and the prevention of suicides by initiating multi-level community-based intervention programmes.

This work is important as in Europe it is estimated that 18.4 million Europeans suffer from depression. Having depression can impair the quality of life more than other illnesses and can lead to suicide. Therefore, it is important to stimulate the wider implementation of effective suicide prevention programmes at national and international level.

For more information on regional implementation of the multilevel community-based approach to suicide prevention, please visit the EAAD website.
