Managers

What can a manager do?

If you think that someone at your workplace might be depressed, try to remember how this person usually behaved half a year ago.

How did they act towards you and others?

Asking this question might help you recognise critical and even subtle changes in an employee. Remember though, some people try hard to hide their symptoms because they feel ashamed or guilty.

If you think an employee may be depressed, talk to them.

Additional ways to support

Supporting an employee by:

  • Providing flexible work arrangements, such as flexibility in working times or fewer hours for a set period of time
  • Allocating the person tasks that are less demanding, perhaps with a lower risk of conflict, less coordination or social contact
  • Facilitating access to support and care, whether through workplace support or to a health professional
  • Countering stigma in the workplace
